Quarter Century of Avon in Formula 3

There was a double celebration of the Avon Tyres brand’s 25-year association with the British Formula 3 Championship at Oulton Park on Easter Monday, as the Melksham-based tyre manufacturer, Cooper Tire & Rubber Company Europe Ltd., produced the new 2007 tyre that contributed to Swede Sebastien Hohenthal shattering the lap record by almost half a second.

Avon Tyres commissioned a commemorative cake for the Oulton Park race, iced with the names of each champion since the partnership began in 1982.

All of the F3 team bosses were invited to join the celebration and to be photographed with the cake. Also present at the Cheshire circuit was retiring Avon Tyres F3 stalwart Trevor Swettenham, who has been an ever-present figure in the pitlane since 1988.

Julian Baldwin, Managing Director of Cooper Tire Europe commented:

“We have enjoyed a long and successful relationship with F3 and we are delighted to celebrate that here today at Oulton Park. It is fitting in the first race of our 25th year that we have assisted in setting an impressive new lap record, nearly half a second quicker than Nelson Piquet Jr.’s 2004 time.

“British Formula 3 continues to be a fantastic breeding ground for new talent and that hasn’t changed in recent years. Many great names have raced during our tenure including Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen and Jenson Button. We are delighted to see that Mike Conway, the 2006 champion, is already testing for Honda F1, clearly demonstrating the level of driver the championship is attracting.”

The next round of the Lloyds TSB British F3 International Series takes place on Sunday 22nd April at Donington Park Race Circuit.
